Restoration projects have always been a passion. I started my career in Vermont at age 15 in the family construction business. In my hometown of Bennington, Vermont there are many very significant historic buildings. There I learned the fundamentals of "Good New England Carpentry." Later, after college I had the opportunity to join a restoration crew in the U.S. Virgin Islands. I learned traditional timber-framing joinery and millwork through restoring Danish and French Colonial structures. There were some really great carpenters on the island who taught me the finer points of the trades. Projects included (4) churches, (3) sugar plantations, (4) houses and a beachside villa. Four of those projects were designated landmarks with the National Park Service as part of the Hurricane Hugo reconstruction.
I later moved to the Colorado high country and applied these traditional building skills to log building and log cabin restoration. Mining Architecture, Historic Wooden Churches and Scandinavian Full-Scribe Joinery are particular areas of interest. The skills that I learned restoring historic buildings have provided invaluable insight as an architect later in life.
Historic Preservation projects often involve buildings listed individually or located in registered historic districts. Work may involve additions and alterations, reconstruction of missing elements, preservation, rehabilitation, design approvals, zoning variances, zoning modifications, and tax credits. All work naturally follows The Secretary Of The Interiors Standards For The Treatment Of Historic Properties.
